Tandem paragliding and the faa rules
Tandem paragliding is the fastest and easiest way to experience and possibly pursue this form of free flight. Under FAA rules, a paraglider is classified as an ultra-light aircraft and requires no general aviation license to operate. There are strict rules however that dictate what can be done with an ultra-light. In general, passengers are not allowed. The FAA does realize that it would be foolish for an untrained pilot to operate a paraglider solo for the first time, so they have granted an exemption to allow tandem flight for training purposes.
Your instructor will orientate you with basic information about launching, flying and landing the glider. You will sign a waiver and review some general information that the FAA wants you to be aware of, then acknowledge that you understand this information. Last, you'll receive a 30 day temporary membership to the United States Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association. You're now officially a student and ready to fly.

Instructional tandem flights over the lake
There aren't many limitation for tandem flights over the lake. We launch from the shoreline using a specialized boat and winch to pull us up to altitude. With a bit of headwind, and a few steps we quickly become airborne. We extend our tow pattern for tandem flights to maximize our amount of air time. After a full tour on tow around the perimeter of the lake, we release from the tow line and enjoy free flight. This can be mild to wild. We can gently fly around wings level or you can take the controls and get the feel of flying the glider. Looking for a thrill? We can fly dynamic maneuvers that pull G's comparable to a fighter jet. It's up to you.
instructional Tandem flights at woodrat mountain
Mountain soaring tandem flights provide a surreal view of the tree tops from high above. The Applegate Valley is a world class mountain soaring site. The launch from Woodrat Mountain in Ruch, OR is an easy drive. The improved launch site is large and designed specifically for foot launch aircraft. If conditions are good, there is potential to climb high enough to fly across the valley and land at Longsword Winery where a glass of wine awaits you.
